A complete guide to picking the right domain for your business — and what to avoid.
A domain name is your website's address on the internet — the text visitors type to find you (like "yourbusiness.com"). Every website needs one. Domain names are registered annually, typically for $10–$20/year, and renewed at the same price each year.
Under 15 characters is ideal. Shorter domains are easier to remember, type, and share verbally.
.com is the most recognized and trusted extension. If your preferred .com is taken, consider .co, .io, or a country-specific extension before unusual extensions.
Hyphens are easy to forget and look unprofessional. Numbers are confusing verbally ("five" or "5"?).
If your .com is taken, "austinplumber.com" or "plumbingexperts.com" can be effective alternatives.
Can you say your domain on a phone call without spelling it out? If not, consider a different option.
Before registering, search the USPTO trademark database. Using a trademarked name can cause legal issues.
You can register a new domain directly through Metalique Studios ($15/year) or connect an existing domain from any registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Google Domains, etc.). Domain connection is always free — just update two DNS records.
